RALEIGH, N.C. — GKN Driveline, a major manufacturer of automotive driveline components, plans to create 131 jobs in Person County over the next five years, the governor's office announced Friday.

The average annual salary will be $41,108; the Person County average wage is $32,188.

GKN Driveline already employs more than 950 people in Person, Alamance and Lee counties.

The company was awarded a grant of up to $175,000 from the state's One North Carolina Fund, which provides assistance to companies to attract business to the state.

Friday's announcement came on the heels of the latest unemployment rate, which remained steady at 9.4 percent for the month of May.

According to the North Carolina Division of Employment Security, the rate is 1.1 percentage points lower than its May 2011 rate.

The state jobless rate is higher than the national average, which was at 8.2 percent in May.

The number of people actually working in North Carolina continues to shrink, according to the Division of Employment Security. Nearly 10,000 workers left the labor force between April and May.
