Election year kicks in with NC candidate filing
North Carolina's election season has started in earnest as candidates are filing paperwork for positions from governor to county commissioner.
Posted — UpdatedThe filing period began at noon Monday with competitors lining up at the State Board of Elections in Raleigh and all 100 county board offices. Filing period ends Feb. 29.
About 40 candidates had filed at the state board in the first hour, including Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry, Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill Faison.
Faison is one of three Democrats who want to succeed incumbent Gov. Beverly Perdue, who isn't seeking a second term. Other Democrats also could file. It's unclear whether Republican candidate Pat McCrory will face primary opposition.
Perdue, who said she plans to use her final year in office campaigning for more state funding for public education, declined to endorse any candidate Monday during an appearance at a Raleigh school.
"I hope people across North Carolina will look for a candidate who says, 'I'm all about education. I'm all about pre-K, public schools, community colleges and universities," she said.
The primary is May 8. The general election is Nov. 6.
