Wake school board's Goldman considering run for 'higher office'

Although she didn't specify what office she is considering, Goldman said in a news release Monday that Gov. Bev Perdue's request last week for a temporary sales tax hike to fund education "solidified her desire to bring fiscal responsibility to state government."

The governor's office said the proposal would raise the state sales tax in most counties from 6.75 percent to 7.5 percent, generating an estimated $750 to $800 million in revenue for public education over the year that the hike would be in place.

"I have been contemplating a run for higher office for quite some time," Goldman said in the release. "This recent $750 million tax hike proposal by the governor just doesn’t make sense. Raising taxes isn’t the answer. The real solution is fiscal responsibility, something Raleigh has not seen lately."

When reached for comment Monday afternoon, Goldman said she's not talking further until "things are finalized."

The District 9 school board representative is part of a Republican bloc of school board members who have each said they are considering higher public office this year.

John Tedesco said last week that he plans to announce this week whether he will challenge state school Superintendent June Atkinson, a Democrat.

And in September, Chris Malone announced that he is running for the newly redrawn 35th District seat of the state House of Representatives.

Goldman, Tedesco and Malone's terms on the school board expire in November 2013.
