TARBORO, N.C. — A 13-year-old Tarboro girl who went missing last week with a 20-year-old family friend has been located in South Carolina, police said Friday.

Tarboro police say Leonardo Velasquez Frias checked Nancy Ramirez out of Martin Middle School, possibly by using her brother's identification card, on June 2.

Police said family members think Frias and the teen developed a romantic relationship while he lived with her family in Princeville for the past eight months.

Tarboro police said the two were found in Columbia, S.C. Ramirez was taken into protective custody until local authorities could pick her up.

Frias was awaiting extradition back to North Carolina.

Although Ramirez was not forced to leave with Frias, an arrest warrant charging him with abduction was issued because of her age.
