Suspect in convenience-store shooting faces more charges

Paris Yusef Mack, 17, of 915 Richards St. in Southern Pines, was arrested Tuesday in connection with the robbery late Monday in which investigators say Angus Gene Kelly, 78, exchanged gunfire with men robbing his wife, 75-year-old store clerk Grace Kelly.

Angus Kelly was in serious condition at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, and suspect Randy Joel Williams, 17, of Southern Pines, was in critical condition at Moore Regional Hospital late Tuesday. Grace Kelly was treated and released.

On Wednesday, Mack was named as a suspect in a home invasion at 436 Shaw Ave. in Southern Pines on June 3. He was charged with attempted armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and assault by pointing a gun.

Moore County Sheriff Lane Carter has said that Mack, Williams and the other two suspects in the convenience-store shooting – Leroy Richard Medley, 20, of Southern Pines, and Demarcus James Dennison, 18, of Polkton – might be responsible for a series of armed robberies from Moore County to Charlotte over the past several months.

Mack was being held in the Moore County Detention Center Thursday under a total $350,000 secured bond for the charges he faces in both cases. 

All four suspects in the convenience-store shooting face two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and one count each of first-degree kidnapping and armed robbery. Medley and Dennison were being held under $250,000 bonds.

State Department of Correction records show that Mack was released from jail May 8. He served nearly two months for violating his probation stemming from a 2009 conviction for possession of drugs with intent to sell.

DOC records also show that Williams was on probation for 2010 and 2009 larceny convictions, including one felony, and Medley has 2007 convictions for misdemeanor larceny and wanton injury to personal property.
