West Virginia-Duke settle sports bet

DURHAM, N.C. — The Mayor of Morgantown, W. Va., has settled a sports bet with Durham Mayor Bill Bell involving high-speed Internet.

Morgantown Mayor Bill Byrne bet Bell that his local team, the West Virginia University Mountaineers, would defeat Duke University in the NCAA men’s basketball semifinals in Indianapolis. The Blue Devils went on to beat the Mountaineers and then Butler to become the national champions.

Since Duke beat WVU, Byrne fulfilled the bet by writing a letter on mayor's stationery endorsing Durham's application for super-high-speed Internet connections from Google.

Google is planning to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country. The connections would deliver Internet at more than one gigabit per second, or more than 100 times faster than most Americans currently receive.

Google is expected to announce the trial locations by the end of the year.
