Sunrise services, garden are Triangle Easter traditions
Triangle residents celebrated the Easter weekend in many ways, from Sunday morning sunrise services and an outdoor Biblical drama to Easter egg hunts and garden visits.
Posted — UpdatedEaster Sunday kicked off with a sunrise service at the State Capitol building in downtown Raleigh. Clergy from seven churches participated, and the Raleigh Concert Band played.
Easter Sunday is also usually the busiest day at a Chapel Hill garden that 95-year-old twins Barbara Stiles and Bernice Wade have maintained at their Gimghoul Road home since the 1940s.
"This morning was a good example with many, many beautiful youngsters dressed in their Easter finery," Bernice Wade said Saturday.
On Saturday, hundreds of children scrambled around Moore Square in downtown Raleigh, hunting for Easter eggs. Organizers set out 10,000 eggs so that all the children could find some eggs to put in their basket.
A Cary church also held a unique service Saturday night: a drive-through passion play.
Members of Westwood Baptist Church re-enacted the Biblical scenes of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. The scenes were set along a driving path, so that motorists could pass by them in order.
