Ex-Durham officer reaches plea deal on drugs, weapons charges
Sherrod Peace, who resigned from the Durham Police Department in December, has agreed to plead guilty to possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime, according to court documents.

Sherrod Peace, 35, pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime. A charge of distributing less than 5 grams of crack cocaine will be dismissed.
Under the agreement, Peace will serve at least five years in prison, will not be eligible for parole or probation and could be fined up to $250,000.
Peace will remain free on bond until he is sentenced in August.
An internal investigation of events on Dec. 21, 2009, led to the federal indictment of Peace in late January.
Peace resigned from the Durham Police Department on Dec. 31, 2009. He had joined the department in 2003 and was assigned to the Uniform Patrol Bureau.
He was also a defensive lineman for the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill football team in 1998 and 1999.
