Man killed in shooting outside Butner restaurant

Ronald Dewey Anderson Jr., 45, died of gunshot wounds outside the restaurant at 1515 N.C. Highway 56, authorities said.

He got into an altercation inside the restaurant with three people and gunfire was later exchanged in the parking lot just before 12:30 a.m., Grissom said.

Authorities have identified the others involved in the altercation as Uriah Metcalf, 30, Warren Farrell Owen, 44, and Gwynn Basinger, 36.

Authorities said when Metcalf and Basinger left the restaurant to get into their car, Anderson and Owen followed them outside. Anderson and Metcalf then fired at each other, according to authorities.

Metcalf was not injured.

Authorities have not yet said what sparked the fight, only that the four men knew each other as customers at the restaurant.

“We’re still interviewing witnesses, still the individuals who were involved in it of course, and collecting evidence,” Grissom said.

No charges have been filed yet in connection with the shooting. However, authorities did charge Owen with carrying a concealed weapon, Grissom said.

Anderson and Owen are said to be part of a motorcycle charter, while Metcalf and Basinger are part of a different motorcycle charter, according to authorities.

Authorities are not connecting the motorcycle charters with the shooting at this time, Grissom said.

Metcalf and Basinger also work as federal correction officers in Butner, but they were off duty at the time of the shooting, authorities said.

The investigation was ongoing, Grissom said.
