GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Goldsboro police are investigating after a husband and wife, both employees of America's Best Value Inn, 701 U.S. Highway 70 Bypass, were found dead Monday morning in their room.

The bodies of Suryakant Patel, 65, and his wife, Bhavanaben Patel, 61, were discovered inside Room 108 by a coworker. The couple lived in the room, according to authorities.

Their bodies were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Chapel Hill for autopsies.

Police and agents with the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the deaths as homicides.

Goldsboro police Sgt. Chad Calloway said SBI agents bring additional crime resources to the case.

“Forensic, jurisdiction, a lot of different things that help a local agency,” he explained.

Jeff Moores, who is staying at the motel, said he became concerned for his safety after hearing of the homicides.

"I went up and asked the investigators today, ‘Should we be worried? Do you have someone in custody? What is going on here?’” Moores recalled.

Police wouldn’t discuss the circumstances surrounding the deaths, but Moores said he was told that he was not in any danger.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Goldsboro/Wayne Crime Stoppers at 919-735-2255 or Goldsboro police at 919-580-4211.
