Midtown versus downtown: Both offer entertainment

Dan Tulles and his family enjoyed some down time after dinner on Friday in Midtown. He said he enjoys the convenience of the area.

“I come to the gym almost every day during lunch," Tulles said. "Then other days, I come to get my hair cut."

About three miles away in Raleigh's downtown, Fayetteville Street boasts its own appeal. The mix of night spots and restaurants drew Sarah Hunt and her guests downtown.

“We like being outdoors to dine, and there are a lot of opportunities here to be outdoors. We like to be able to walk from place to place,” Hunt said. “It’s just a fun, relaxing place to hang out.”

For businesses lining the main thoroughfare, staying competitive with other Raleigh hotspots keeps them in business despite the sluggish economy.

Steve Hunt, who runs The Big Easy on Fayetteville Street, said his business saw a surge after the Raleigh Convention Center opened last September.

In Midtown, Sal Sejdiu, who runs Cinelli’s, admits his pizzeria has taken a hit from the down economy but said he is grateful for the added attractions that draw people to North Hills.
