Senate OKs new leader for Fort Bragg

The Senate confirmed Lt. Gen. Frank Helmick as the new leader for the post. He will take command of Fort Bragg and the 18th Airborne Corps in November.

Helmick is leaving his role as commanding general of the Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq.

He will replace Lt. Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III, who departed Aug. 13 to become director of the Joint Staff at the Pentagon.

The mission of Helmick's command in Iraq is to assist Iraqi institutions, such as the security forces, and to prepare them to operate with reduced coalition support.

He previously was commanding general of the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force.
