Man pleads guilty in Lake Lynn jogger attack

Devin Terralle Carmen, 19, was arrested in May 2008 in connection with a March 31, 2008, attack at Lake Lynn in Raleigh, in which a 22-year-old jogger told police she was attacked from behind and hit twice in the head with a rock. The assailant ran away when she screamed.

Carmen entered an open guilty plea to assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. An existing charge of assault on a female was dropped.

He also pleaded guilty to charges of attempted first-degree burglary, first-degree burglary, attempted second-degree rape, misdemeanor stalking and attempted misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon.

Those charges stemmed from three other crimes from July 2007 to January 2008 in the River Landings subdivision in North Raleigh.

Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens sentenced Carmen to 73 to 97 months for the Lake Lynn assault and the misdemeanor charges; 64 to 86 months for the attempted rape charge and 25 to 39 months for the attempted burglary charge.

"Your actions speak louder than words," Stephens told Carmen. "You don't seem to appreciate the seriousness of what you've done. The worst thing you can do is steal somebody's security."
