RALEIGH, N.C. — Where can you buy local, buy fresh and buy organic – without breaking the bank?

It's no surprise that the State Farmers Market in Raleigh offers a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.

But did you know that it also offers other fresh-from-the-farm products, like meat, cheese, milk, jams and jellies? All are inside The Market Shoppes, just up the hill from the main area.

"Every day, I hear people who've decided to come in this building. They say, 'We didn't even know you were here. We didn’t know you had this,'" said Jennifer Porter, one of the many meat vendors who sell daily at the Meat and Cheese Center.

The center sells a variety of meats, including pork, goat, rabbit, angus beef, filet mignon and bacon. It's all natural with no salt added.

"The farmers can tell you exactly what they've fed the animals, how they've raised them and how they go about producing the milk and cheese they have," said Monica Wood, a marketing specialist for the Farmer's Market.

Cheese, Wood said, is one of the market's biggest sellers.

So how much do these products cost? Prices are comparable to those at area grocery stores, and some items are even cheaper.

"With the organically grown stuff, it's actually right in line with that," customer Shay Miller said. "And for me, I like it better because it's fresh."

"It's all locally grown, so it's giving back to our local economy, our local farmers, which, for me, is every reason in the world to give back to our community," she said.
