Reward offered in fatal Fayetteville shooting

Gov. Bev Perdue’s office is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the 2007 shooting death of Weldon D. Baker.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Gov. Bev Perdue’s office is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the 2007 shooting death of Weldon D. Baker.

Baker was shot on Nov 2, 2007 at the Ponderosa Apartments, 5456 Wichita Drive. He died on the scene.

Investigators said Baker saw the two strangers leaving a neighbor's home with a TV set and wanted to question the men. When Baker said something to them, police said, they shot him.

“This was someone who wasn’t trying to be Superman or to stop it,” Baker’s wife Val Jones-Baker said Thursday. “This was someone who was asking, ‘Brother, why are you doing this?’”



Jones-Baker said she and her husband had been packing up the entire day in preparation to drive to Alabama. They had planned to start new jobs and a new life. An acquaintance had been helping the couple move. He was not injured.

Jones-Baker eventually moved to Alabama, but has since returned to Fayetteville.

Police said they have no solid leads in the shooting. Det. Terrance Phillips said the “lack of communication from the community” has made the case more difficult.

Phillips said the resident at the apartment where the men were removing the TV was not home at the time of the incident.

Phillips said he’s confident the two suspects are still in the area and that someone around the Ponderosa Apartments knows something about the shooting.

The suspects are described as black men in their late 20s or early 30s. They were seen driving from the scene in a teal, green or blue Nissan Altima.

“It just doesn’t get any better because there is no closure. I know there are some people out there that know and that’s the problem…you know something but you won’t step up,” Jones-Baker said.
