Girl Scouts launch Web site to teach teens online safety
The Girl Scouts and Microsoft have launched the LMK or Let Me Know Web site, which offers teens and parents information on how to protect themselves from predators.
Posted — UpdatedFAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Briana Williams, 13, has made it her mission to warn others of the dangers online.
“If you put your information out there, you’re putting yourself out there for everyone,” Briana said.
Briana is on the editorial board of a new safety campaign launched by the North Carolina Coastal Pines Girl Scouts and Microsoft. Dubbed LMK or Let Me Know, teens and parents can go online and learn how to protect themselves from predators.
“I don't think a lot of parents even know what their kids are doing online, and we hope LMK will not only help parents talk to their teens, but it's also teaching teens…maybe I shouldn't be doing something like this,” said Eva Parks Spero, of the North Carolina Coastal Pines Girl Scouts.
The program also targets mobile phone use as well. Phone numbers can be passed around, leaving a teen open to receiving phone calls and text messages from strangers.
Sending provocative pictures or "sexting" is not just a troubling trend, it's a crime. LMK offers advice on how to deal with issues like sexting.
Briana said LMK is a way to help keep other children safe. “I’m really glad to help other kids,” she said.
A recent study suggests 70 percent of teens are sharing too much personal information online.
