CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. — Lifeguards at Carolina Beach have a new system of waterproof colored wristbands to help lost children find their parents.

Each lifeguard stand on the beach is painted a different color, and parents and children can match their wristbands with the color of the nearest stand.

Lifeguards and officers with Carolina the Carolina Beach Police Department's Ocean Rescue Team says they hope the system cuts down on the amount of time lifeguards spend looking for the parents of lost children.

Ocean Beach lifeguards dealt with 36 lost children last year, which took a lot of time away from watching swimmers, officials there said.

A similar colored wristband system has been used in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., for two years, and officials there say it has worked well.
