RALEIGH, N.C. — After several muggy, rainy days this week, very hot weather will hit the Triangle Thursday and last through the weekend. Friday and Saturday will be nearly 100 degrees.

"It's a really gray, drab, dreary day," said WRAL meteorologist Nate Johnson. "(But) the heat is sort of sneaking up on us."

Overcast skies, sprinkles and showers and isolated storms remain in the forecast for Wednesday. The temperatures will stay low, no higher than the upper 70s.

Counties in the western portion of the state were under a severe thunderstorm watch through Wednesday evening. That weather wasn't expected to affect the Triangle, Johnson said.

After that, the weather will do a dramatic turnabout.

"As the week goes on, the sunshine returns, and by the end of the work week and the weekend, we could be baking," said WRAL Meteorologist Mike Maze said.
