Wake schools cancel spring job fairs

The school system is waiting to find out if the county and state will fulfill its proposed budget of $1.7 billion for the 2009-2010 school year.

Once the state budget is approved, the school system will be able to evaluate its staffing levels, officials said. WCPSS was still accepting applications for teachers on its Web site.

Superintendent Del Burns has ordered principals to fill no more than 95 percent of their openings. That means some of the nearly 1,500 teachers and school employees whose contracts expire at the end of June could lose their jobs.

The school system was also complying with an order from State Board of Education Chairman Bill Harrison to limit spending to essential needs and has made permanent $11 million in state and local cuts from last year.
