Initiative urges Raleigh residents to shop local
Shop Local Raleigh – funded by the Greater Raleigh Merchants Association – is a Web site to promote and support locally-owned, independent businesses.
Posted — UpdatedRALEIGH, N.C. — A group of local merchants have launched a Web site to help fuel Raleigh’s economy.
Shop Local Raleigh – funded by the Greater Raleigh Merchants Association – is an initiative to promote and support locally-owned, independent businesses.
Burke Brothers Hardware is one of nearly 100 businesses registered with Shop Local Raleigh. Burke has been family-owned and -operated since 1936.
“Raleigh has a lot of new people moving into it every day,” co-owner Johnny Burke said. “We’re trying to reach those new customers.”
At Cameron Village, some shoppers said on Saturday that they seek out the more unique, locally owned shops.
Other say they will go wherever the deal is.
“I don’t go to the mom and pop’s that often,” shopper Eddie Bedwell said. “I do get better deals at Dillard's, Macy’s or, usually, Belk.”
Burke said local businesses have to work harder to earn business now.
