FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — An Army Special Operations soldier died early Friday when he was hit by a car on the shoulder of the All-American Freeway, police said.

The man, whose name hasn't been released, was riding in a Jeep with a woman at about 3 a.m. when they began arguing, police said. The man got out of the Jeep on the northbound shoulder of All-American Freeway – heading toward Fort Bragg – near the Cliffdale Road exit and was walking along the road when the Jeep hit him, police said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were questioning the woman Friday to determine whether the incident was an accident or intentional. No charges had been filed by Friday evening.

The relationship between the man and the woman was unclear Friday. Police said she was a civilian but didn't release her name.

The All-American Freeway was closed near Cliffdale Road for a short time Friday morning while police investigated the case.
