UNC student group hosts second immigration talk

Protesters disrupted a similar speech last week by former Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo, who spoke about his opposition to in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A week after protesters disrupted the speech of former Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo, a student group at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will host a second speaker who is a vocal opponent of illegal immigration.

Former Virginia Rep. Virgil Goode will speak on campus Wednesday night in a talk entitled, "Hate Speech, Free Speech and the Multiculturalism."

The event is the second organized by the group Youth for Western Civilization, a student group that opposes mass immigration and multiculturalism.

Protesters disrupted Tancredo's speech on April 14 by shouting profanities and unfurling banners as the former Colorado congressman tried to address an audience about his opposition to in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

Police eventually halted his speech and had to use pepper spray after demonstrators broke a window.

Goode is scheduled to speak at 6:30 p.m., and the venue might be moved to a bigger auditorium. UNC security officials said they are preparing for any protests that might come with the event.
