Movie filming upsets some Durham business owners
Some owners say they were not notified about the filming of a Hollywood movie that closed down Main Street for part of Monday.
Posted — UpdatedDURHAM, N.C. — The filming of the movie "Main Street" on Main Street in downtown Durham is causing a stir among some local business owners.
The street was closed temporarily Monday while crews filmed a scene for the upcoming Hollywood film, but some business owners said they were unaware of the day's production schedule or that the street would be closed.
The movie's publicist, David Linck, said local businesses had been informed of the shooting schedule.
Filming for "Main Street," which stars Colin Firth and Patricia Clarkson, began last month and is expected to last until the first week of May.
Scenes are being shot in several locations in and around downtown.
Aaron Syrett, director of the North Carolina Film Office, estimated filming would create about 300 temporary jobs for acting extras and film crew members. That would translate into $6 million to $10 million in local spending.
In the past 30 years, more than 800 films and 15 television series have shot on location in North Carolina. Twenty-four were filmed in Durham, including 1988's "Bull Durham" and 1997's "Kiss the Girls."
