RALEIGH, N.C. — In response to tough economic times, St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Raleigh started a midweek prayer service “Tuesdays for Troubled Times.”

“You can get sort of sucked into the headlines and what you hear,” the Rev. Ben Williams, said.

For the past four months, the small group has met every Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. to pray for things to get better.

“We’ve got to pray for our country. We’ve got to do something,” said Donna Barbour, a member of the congregation. She has been going to the service for months and said that it helps.

“I live every day not knowing if I’ll have my house in  six months. You just don’t know. So, I just pray about it and do the best I can,” Barbour said.

Williams said he recently "paid $650 worth of utility bills" for church members.

“In the midst of all that news, we need to offer a word of hope and a word to this community that while some of those things may be crashing, God is not. And God is ever present and we’re going to be a people of hope," he said.
