CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The director of bands at Saint Augustine's College died while on a trip with the college band to the CIAA basketball tournament in Charlotte.

The cause of death for William E. Woods Sr. has not been determined, according to spokeswoman Crystal Kimpson Roberts at the college in Raleigh.

"Mr. Woods made a significant impact on the Saint Augustine's College community and our band program, from the program's implementation and founding to the supervision of the jazz and pep bands," college President Dianne Boardley Suber said. "He will be greatly missed."

Woods, who had been at the college since 2005, was also an assistant professor in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.

Saint Augustine's men's and women's teams have both advanced to the tournament's semifinals rounds. The women were scheduled to play at 3 p.m. Friday and the men at 9 p.m.

Saint Augustine's is a 142-year-old, private, historically black college.
