Weatherization can help lower heating bills

"My utility bill went from an average of $361 a month to an immediate average of $127 per month,” homeowner Patricia McCullers said.

McGirt checks air vents to make sure they are sealed, and examines windows and doors for gaps. He replaces light bulbs with energy-efficient florescent bulbs and checks the attic to make sure there are no drafts.

McGirt also wraps pipes in the crawl space and insulates the hot water heater.

"It saves the low income folks dollars and it saves energy,” said Garman Troup, with Resources for Seniors.

The average homeowner receives about $2,500 worth of work as a result of the audit.

McCullers received even more after the audit revealed she needed a new heating and cooling system. She got a new unit from the program free of charge.

"Very seldom do I even turn the heat on at night. My son and I get so warm,” McCullers said.
