ANGIER, N.C. — A missing Angier woman who was the subject of a Silver Alert Monday morning has been found dead.

Carrie C. Evans, 85, walked away from the Primrose Retirement Home in Angier at about 7:40 a.m., authorities said. The Silver Alert was issued shortly after 9 a.m. and canceled shortly after 1 p.m.

About three hours after the alert was issued, a North Carolina Highway Patrol helicopter discovered her body behind the Kidde Fire Plant off Junny Road in Angier, Angier Police Detective William Coats said.

Her cause of death was under investigation, and further details were not available.

Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
