Interim probation chief named

Moose replaces Robert Guy, the embattled probation chief who left last week. He will oversee operations of the state’s probation and parole system while officials search for a permanent replacement.

Moose is a 25-year probation veteran who began his career in 1984 as a probation officer in Wake County. During his tenure, he has managed the division’s electronic house-arrest program, intensive supervision programs and special operations. He most recently served as a special assistant handling the division’s legislative and policy issues.

Keller and his staff plan to meet this week with officials from the National Institute of Corrections, a federal agency that reviewed North Carolina’s probation operations last summer, to discuss the institute's findings and recommendations.

The probation office has been under fire for months after men who were on probation were charged with killing a Duke University graduate student and the student body president of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
