FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The opening of a new middle school in Cumberland County will mean the shuffling of more than 1,700 students.

Under the plan presented at Tuesday meeting of a county Board of Education committee, 1,761 elementary and middle-school students will be reassigned.

The new Gray’s Creek Middle School will open in August. School officials hope the $17.6 million project will ease overcrowding at John Griffin Middle School.

The full board will vote on the plan at a later meeting.
