DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham County Sheriff's Office has opened an investigation into the deaths of two people whose bodies were found in a house Sunday morning.

The identities of the deceased have not been released but investigators said the victims were a woman in her 60s and a man. The woman's son called 911 to report finding the bodies around 10 a.m. at 5501 Bakers Mill Road, deputies said.

Just before 10 a.m., neighbors said they heard an unusual sound in the area.

"It sounded like a transformer blew nearby," neighbor Alisha Cawthorne said.

Authorities said the son lived at the residence, which lies near the Durham-Orange county line. Officers said the woman has another son, who was away at school.

The home is registered to Pamela P. Turner, according to tax records.

Police said they believe the crime was not random but did classify the deaths "as suspicious."

Sources close to the investigation said the deaths were an apparent murder/suicide.
