FOUR OAKS, N.C. — Police established more facts Thursday about an accident that killed a Johnston County woman. At the same time, loved ones scheduled services for her and remembered her fondly.

Donna Baker, 23, of 1505 Elevation Road in Four Oaks, was walking with her fiancé and their 13-month-old baby on Old School Road when a car struck and killed her Tuesday.

Michael Beavers remembered his fiancée as an all-star baseball player who was full of life.

“I know she’s looking down and smiling. She knows she is loved,” he said.

Beavers, friends and family created a memorial for Baker with flowers in her favorite colors. It is at the spot where authorities said a car driven by Randy Stanley, 25, also of Four Oaks, hit Baker from behind.

Beavers and Baker’s family said they want charges filed in the case, but police said it appeared Stanley was not speeding. Stanley said he had the sun in his eyes, police said Thursday.

Baker was also walking in the street because there are no sidewalks. The people who created the memorial intend it to send a message for drivers to slow down.

For Beavers, it is a way to pay tribute to a woman he called his greatest love.

“I know the Lord’s got her now. She went Sunday and gave her life to the Lord. He heard her. I know she’s in heaven,” he said.

Friends remembered Baker for her upbeat personality.

“You'd always see her with a smile. You would see her in the store and she would yell across. That was Donna. I mean, people out there, I don’t understand why they speed,” said Maria Messengill, a childhood friend of Baker.

Services for Baker are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Minshew Funeral Home in Four Oaks. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Baker's funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
