SELMA, N.C. — A fast and extensive search by Johnston County authorities ended happily Friday with the safe return of a missing 6-year-old to his family.

Relatives reported Adriano Avila as missing from his home on Country Lane in a mobile home park around 8:30 p.m., authorities said.

His mother, Brandy Paz, realized Adriano was missing when she got out of the shower, and the family briefly searched for Adriano, who goes by A.J., before calling authorities.

The Johnston County Sheriff's Office launched a search, and three hours later, searchers located Adriano hiding beneath an abandoned trailer off Blue Grass Road.

Paz welcomed her son back home with tears of joy.

"I was thinking they were going to find him in the water, because there's three ponds back there. And he don't go there, even with me," Paz said. "I'm just glad he's at home."

Authorities believe Adriano wandered off when his family returned from a visit to a barn about a quarter mile away from their home to look at some newborn chickens.
