Sunday's Soaking to Be Followed by 'Beautiful Day' Monday

Sunday's rain was a welcomed sight as the Triangle continues to struggle from record drought conditions. Substantial rainfall was reported Sunday afternoon across the WRAL viewing area.

RDU International received 1.92 inches of rain combined on Saturday and Sunday, breaking the record for that date. Sanford saw a strong soaking over the past two days with 2.58 inches of rain.

Thunderstorms mixed in with the rain in Robeson, Columbus and Bladen counties. There was a chance for thunder and lightning in the Triangle area later Sunday.

Temperatures Sunday ranged from the low 50s in the north, to the low 60s in the south. In the evening, temperatures hovered around the mid to upper 30s.

On Thursday, Raleigh had about 95 days of drinking water left in Falls Lake. City officials plan to implement tougher water restrictions once the supply drops to 90 days.

Durham's two primary reservoirs, Lake Michie and the Little River Reservoir, have about 36 days of quality drinking water left between them. Officials hope the 600 million gallons of water in Teer Quarry will extend the available drinking water supply by about a month. City crews began installing a tap at Teer Quarry last week.

Seventy-eight of North Carolina's 100 counties, including the Triangle, are experiencing exceptional drought conditions, the worst of five categories monitored by the state Drought Management Advisory Council.

Nine counties are experiencing extreme drought, while 13 counties in the eastern end of the state are experiencing severe drought, according to the council's latest report.
