RALEIGH, N.C. — Two high school marching bands from Raleigh are preparing for big bowl game parades.

The Broughton High School band will be performing in the New Year’s Day Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif.

It is the first time in the parade's 119 year history that a band from Raleigh has been invited to perform. The 186 members of the band will march nearly a 6-mile route.

"It's exciting," said band director Jeffrey Richardson, for whom the trip is especially meaningful. He has directed the Broughton High School band for 30 years and is retiring this spring.

The Southeast Raleigh High School band left on Dec. 26 to participate in the Citrus Parade. The parade will be held on Saturday, Dec. 29.

Southeast Raleigh is one of 13 high school bands marching in the parade. They are also the only band from North Carolina to perform.
