Crews Drain Pond to Look for Evidence in Shooting Case
WILSON, N.C. — Police on Friday found a weapon in a shopping center pond, but it was too early to say whether the weapon was linked to a Christmas morning shooting death.

Crews used four pumps to drain a retention pond behind a Wal-Mart at the Westwood Shopping Center Thursday afternoon and evening while investigators searched for evidence in the shooting.

Derrick Davis, 26, was shot and killed early Christmas morning, but police said it appeared to be an accidental shooting.

Davis ran out of gas in the parking lot of a Kangaroo gas station and was in the vehicle with two men at about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday when he was shot. While the men were waiting for someone to pick them up, a gun was fired and Davis was hit, police said.

Police have not released the identities of the two men in the car with him or where on the body Davis was shot.
