BATTLEBORO, N.C. — Authorities canceled a Silver Alert for an elderly Nash County man after he was found dead from natural causes on Saturday morning.

The body of  Donald Lee Melvin, 77, of Battleboro, was found about a quarter mile from his house, officials said. Melvin had parked his truck on a path and was found approximately 75 feet away.

Officials said Melvin died of natural causes, and there was no indication of foul play.

On Friday afternoon, the North Carolina Center for Missing Persons issued an alert for Melvin. Officials said they believed he suffered from dementia or another cognitive impairment.

Melvin's case was the first time North Carolina used its Silver Alert program, which was launched on Monday. Silver Alerts are issued to help find missing adults with Alzheimer's disease, dementia or other cognitive impairments.
