Durham, Raleigh Rescue Missions Step Up for Christmas, Winter
With presents and coats, the Raleigh and Durham Rescue Missions are spreading warmth and cheer this holiday season.
Posted — UpdatedVolunteers with the Friends of the Durham Rescue Mission donated Christmas presents for 23 children from needy families.
The children opened their gifts and filled up on a home-cooked meal, along with their mothers on Friday.
The Raleigh Rescue Mission asked for the public's help in providing the needy with coats, hats, gloves and blankets as colder weather approaches.
Charity officials said it seems as if there is more demand for such items this year.
"We were probably looking at maybe giving out 2,500 to 3,000 blankets this year, as we look at what we've done in the past," Lynn Daniell, the charity's executive director, said.
"I'm not sure what our number is now, but we have given out 700 to 800 blankets. And there, again, we're just getting into the cold season."
Daniell said the rescue mission has had a good year, but each year, it seems as if there are more people in need.
