Man Dressed as Woman Robs Bank, Prompts Bomb Scare

A robbery was reported at Omni National Bank, 4841 Ramsey St., shortly after 9 a.m., police said. A black man dressed as a woman fled with an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

The man was described as about 6 feet tall, thin and in his 20s. He was wearing a strawberry-blond wig, white pants and white sweater and was carrying a messenger-style bag. He left on foot or possibly on a bicycle or in a white vehicle, police said.

Eight employees were inside the bank at the time or the robbery, but no injuries were reported.

About an hour later, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office bomb squad was called to the bank to investigate a suspicious package inside.

The bank employees were taken out of the building, and members of the bomb squad went inside wearing protective gear.

"Anytime anyone leaves anything that appears to be a suspicious package or device, we obviously bring in our K-9s, bring in the bomb squad, just to make sure and be on the safe side," police department spokeswoman Jamie Smith said. "Most of the time, it turns out to be nothing."

A remote-controlled robot was sent into the building to retrieve the package at about 11:20 a.m. The robot emerged from the bank about 45 minutes later and took the package to a nearby field to be disrupted.

One southbound lane of Ramsey Street was closed Monday morning during the incident.
