RALEIGH, N.C. — A search for a 2-year-old girl was called off shortly after noon Tuesday when the child was found near a pond in a wooded area about a half-mile away from her home.

Wake County deputies found Rachel Kelly Carr, with scratches and crying, but otherwise in good condition, they said.

She was outside with some of her older siblings when she likely wandered off, authorities said. They realized she was gone and reported her missing about 9:30 a.m.

Friends of Carr's mother said she was emotional and did not want to talk about what happened.

"I don't know she thought anything was out of the ordinary," Rachel's sister, Danielle Carr, said of her sister. "But mom was definitely crying and everything like that."

Wake County sheriff's authorities and the North Carolina Highway Patrol searched by land with ground crews and search dogs and by air with the Highway Patrol helicopter.

The search prompted authorities to shut down briefly roads near her home in the area of Banks Road and U.S. Highway 401 while they searched for the child.

Deputies found Rachel as state officials were preparing to issue an Amber Alert.
