Survivor of Rocky Mount Church Stabbing Improving

Eve Beasley, 60, was moved Friday night from intensive care to intermediate care at Pitt Memorial Hospital. Billy Beasley said his mother was alert and responding to questions.

Her daughters, Macon Fritsch, who lives in Knoxville, Tenn., and Amanda Beasley, who works at and graduated from Meredith College in Raleigh, have temporarily moved to Greenville to stay at their mother's side, along with their brother. Billy Beasley lives in Fuquay-Varina.

Eve Beasley and her longtime friend and coworker at Meals on Wheels, Debbie Kornegay, were preparing meals for delivery at Lakeside Baptist Church on Oct. 18. A drifter, Tommy Lee Holiday, 30, stabbed each of them multiple times, Rocky Mount police said.

Kornegay, 58, died at a local hospital. Family members said Beasley was stabbed 10 times.

Relatives said that in the hospital, Beasley roused herself enough to describe her attacker and ask a church secretary to call her children to tell them she loved them

"She was able to give a full description of the attacker, and that was crucial to the investigation," Billy Beasley said in an interview with WRAL in late October.

Holiday confessed, police said, and was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and armed robbery, among other counts. Prosecutors have said they plan to seek the death penalty.
