14-Year-Old in Custody After Shots Fired at School Bus

Police spokesman Jim Sughrue said someone fired two shots from a pellet gun at Bus 456 at about 3:22 p.m. at the intersection of Layden and Knowles streets, hitting a window and the body of the of the vehicle.

No one was injured, and the 16 children on board – from Ligon Middle School and Enloe High School – were transferred to Bus 418 and taken to their destinations, Wake County Public School System spokesman Chip Sutter said.

Chloe Dorin, 11, said she was on the bus chatting with friends when she heard a “bang.”

A pellet hit a window across the aisle from the Ligon Middle School sixth-grader. Pieces of glass from the window scraped her right arm but didn’t draw any blood, she said.

“Everyone started screaming,” Chloe said. “Everyone got down on the floor.”

She immediately called her mother, Dawn Dorin, who then called 911. Once the students calmed down,Chloe and others started taking pictures of the damage with their cell phones.

In an interview later Wednesday, Chloe showed pictures she took of the pellet hole in the window and said she tried to keep low as she waited for another bus to arrive.

“It scared the daylights out of me,” Chloe said.

In a separate incident, transportation officials said another bus was damaged by a pellet gun in Apex on Tuesday. Its windshield was repaired, and the bus was back in service Wednesday.
