CARY, N.C. — Prosecutors will meet with Cary police next week to decide whether to charge a driver who hit and killed a jogger earlier this week.

They were expected to meet Friday, but discussions "will extend at least into next week," Town of Cary spokeswoman Susan Moran said.

Maria Ponce-Perez, 27, of Sweetspire Court, was struck from behind Tuesday afternoon near the intersection of Reedy Creek Road and Dynasty Drive. Police said the driver immediately stopped and contacted police and paramedics.

Ponce-Perez, a student at Wake Technical Community College and waitress at Brier Creek Country Club, was running with the flow of traffic, police said.

Investigators spent two days trying to identify Ponce-Perez and released a composite photo as part of their efforts. A fingerprint match by immigration officials helped police identify her.
