DURHAM, N.C. — A fatal accident caused traffic backups Saturday night at the entrance ramp onto U.S. Highway 15-501 off southbound Interstate 85 near the Hillsboro Road exit in Durham.

Investigators said at 6:15 p.m., the driver of a pick-up truck lost control on the ramp and flipped down to a creek bed below. One person was killed, and two people were seriously injured.

They were still in critical condition Sunday morning, officials said. Their identities have not been released.

The accident created a dangerous situation for motorists as the exit ramp was closed off with flares for investigators. Some drivers swerved to avoid that ramp. A WRAL photographer witnessed another accident in the same spot while at the scene.

It took crews nearly four hours to pull the pick-up truck out of the creek bed.

Traffic was backed up for three hours. Some drivers went another exit south on I-85 to Cole Mill Road to get on U.S. 15-50, which created another traffic jam.

Durham police continued to investigate the accident Sunday and said they have made no decision on whether charges will be filed.
