Former Foster Parent Faces Rape Charges
A former foster parent faced charges Friday for allegedly raping a child. Investigators said the abuse went on for years.
Posted — UpdatedRALEIGH, N.C. — A former foster parent faced charges Friday for allegedly raping a child. Investigators said the abuse went on for years.
William Gregory King, 49, was held at the Wake County Jail on a $5.5 million bond Friday. Investigators said the abuse started when the girl was 6 and lasted 10 years.
King showed no emotion as the charges were read by the magistrate judge. The former foster parent faced 18 counts relating to raping a child over a 10-year period.
His wife did not want to talk to WRAL about the charges. She did confirm that she and her husband were foster parents at one time, but said they were no longer.
Tracie Free lives across the street from the King family. She said they're a nice, quiet family, and she was shocked to hear the news.
“I can’t imagine someone living with that for 10 years,” Free said. “I’m really concerned for the person involved and disappointed in the adult, very disappointed.”
Attorney Roger Smith represents King. He said he intends to fight the charges.
“What I know of him is that he is a gentle-hearted soul,” Smith said.
The director of the Child Welfare Division for the Wake County Department of Human Services, who oversees the foster care program, said he could not give WRAL any information Friday night.
