Seventh Shooting Suspect Extradited to N.C.

Rahfaan Yamar Ali, 34, was extradited from New Jersey and processed at the Wake County jail on Friday night.

He is one of five people charged with murder in the shooting death of Gelnirys Ortega, 13, on May 1. Two other men are charged with being accessories after the fact.

Officers from the U.S. Marshals Service's NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Ali at the Nirdip Motel on Thursday, June 21. Marshals from Raleigh figured out Ali's whereabouts and contacted the Trenton office.

Ali had been held in the Burlington County jail, awaiting extradition, until Friday.

A hail of gunfire wounded Milagros Ortega when she opened the door to her apartment in Remington on the Green in north Raleigh. Her daughter, Gelnirys Ortega, was shot in the head and killed.

Gelnirys Ortega was a seventh-grader at West Milbrook Middle School.

At the time, Raleigh police said the shooting was not a random act but have not disclosed what they believe was the motive.

Raleigh's Fugitive Task Force tracked three suspects to Baltimore, Maryland, and Baltimore County police arrested Francisco Javier Mora-Mejia, 28, Omar Varona Sandoval, 26, and Manuel Arturo Benavides Arias, 28.

Raleigh police arrested Raul Antonio Pichardo, 25, on a charge of murder and charged Wilson Batista Roldao, 29, as an accessory after the fact of murder. Police also took Shawn Taylor, 27, into custody.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, police said.
