RALEIGH, N.C. — Preliminary test results released Thursday show that 91 percent of Wake County students in the third through eighth grades are reading at or above grade level.

Meanwhile, 76 percent of those students were testing at or above grade level in math, district administrators said.

But the proficiency rates for area high school students in the two subjects fell by about 5 percentage points, administrators said.

Final results from the end-of-grade and end-of-course tests will be released next month. The tests are used to measure the progress of students and school districts under the federal No Child Left Behind law.
