APEX, N.C. — The Town of Apex will join other Wake County municipalities, like Cary and Raleigh, this fall when it imposes mandatory year-round water restrictions.

The Town Council approved the measure at a meeting Tuesday that will limit when town customers can water their lawns using irrigation systems.

Beginning Oct. 1, water customers with addresses ending with a 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 can irrigate lawns on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Watering at addresses ending with a 2, 4, 6, 8 or 0 will only be allowed on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Lawn irrigation will not be allowed on Mondays. Handheld hose watering is allowed every day.

Apex water customers can obtain a 60-day "New Landscape Permit" from Public Works at 105 Upchurch St. to allow for irrigation of new plantings, including newly sodded lawns, first yard seedings or larger commercial plantings.

A written notice will be issued for a first violation of the new mandatory rules. Additional fines could be as much as $1,000 per violation per day.
