West Raleigh Burglar Favors Daylight Duty

RALEIGH — Imagine locking all the doors and all the windows, leaving on a light andeven television set and still feeling unsafe inside your home. People ina Raleigh neighborhood are dealing with that kind of fear, and it's notunreasonable. There have been 10 burglaries in a small area off WesternBoulevard, on the Raleigh-Cary line, since mid-November.

Bill Roberts witnessed someone climbing over a tree over the weekend. Hecouldn't get a good glimpse of the person. That shadowy image was aburglar. The crook broke a window, and made off with a bicycle, a cameralens and jewelry. Roberts is now the latest victim of the West Raleighdaytime burglary spree.

"The scariest thing for me was when I found he had taken a three poundsledge hammer from one of our toolboxes and had it sitting by the door ashe was taking stuff in case somebody walked in on him," Roberts recalls.

The latest robbery happened on Grovewood Lane. Other burglaries have happened on Dunwoody, Shaub, Driftwood, Grove and Powell. Almost all ofthem happened in broad daylight. All of the crimes have been concentratedin less than a square mile area off Western Boulevard.

Janet Mobley is concentrating on bringing the neighbors together. Mobleyhopes she can be more aware of what's going on around her home and herneighbors' homes, since she's home during the day.

Martha Harvey suggests homeowners hide their most valuable items, andleave the others to be replaced by insurance. She says things like TVscan be bought again. Jewelry and nostalgic items can often beirreplaceable.

Day or night, there are some steps you can take to protect your home:

  • Replace doorknobs with pushbutton locks.
  • Get more secure locks for your windows.
  • Don't leave an extra house key under the doormat, a flower pot orother "secret" place.
  • Trim the shrubbery around your home.
