DWI Net Active in Raleigh

RALEIGH — Raleigh was one of six sites across the statewhose motorists got special attention Saturday night. A DWI checkpointwas set up on the Beltline near the Walnut Avenue exit.

Five drivers were charged with driving while intoxicated, and 93 totalarrests were made, the latter for a variety of infractions.

The checkpoint was manned from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. The roadway was lit byhuge overhead lights, and motorists were alerted to an unexpected stop.

Approximately six to eight officers stationed themselves along theroad, and the same number of cars were flagged to come ahead in singlefile. Each car was checked by an officer. The driver was either told togo onor was directed off the road for further questioning.
