Torbush Takes Over Immediately

Carl Torbush will begin coaching the Tar Heel football team immediately. Players say they're pleased.
CHAPEL HILL — Former defensive coordinator Carl Torbushwill take the reins at the University of North Carolina immediately. Theannouncement of his appointment to the head football coaching positioncame at a news conference Monday afternoon, just five days after formerhead coach Mack Brown announced he was moving to Texas.

Torbush has been with the Carolina program for ten years. He has a lotto live up to, as Carolina wraps up its most successful season inyears. He's no stranger to the ways of the Tar Heels, though. Torbush hasbeen an assistant to Brown as defensive coordinator for three years. Lastyear, he was named National Defensive Coordinator of the Year by AmericanFootball Quarterly.

UNC Athletic Director Dick Baddour says Torbush was always high on hislist of candidates.

David Glenn of the ACC Sports Journal says there is much more to beinga good coach than what fans see on the field.

As WRAL-TV5's LenBesthoff discovered Monday night, Torbush has already scored somepoints with the Carolina faithful. UNC fan Dave Campbell says he thinksTorbush was the right choice.

UNC fan Steve Smith says he thinks it's important that Torbush alreadyknow the Carolina ropes.

UNC fan Kris Korteweg says he thinks officials knew what they weredoing when they decided to go with Torbush.

Torbush will lead UNC into the Gator Bowl in January where they will dobattle with Virginia Tech. Torbush was a head coach for one year atLouisiana Tech in 1987, where he had a 3 and 8 record. He returned to UNCthe next year.
